It's very tempting to think about giving the gift of a kitten or puppy to your loved ones...the kids have been asking all year for a dog, or maybe you know that the family would really enjoy having a second cat. It would be a guaranteed best gift of the year,
and you know it would make this holiday one to remember.
But wouldn't you rather the family share in the day that they all went out to meet the newest member of the household?
Instead of a pet under the tree, give a small gift that the pet-parent-to-be will be sure to need, like a food bowl, a collar or leash.
Make or purchase a gift certificate for the adoption of a new pet from the local humane society, or for pet insurance or training classes.

As a fun little stocking stuffer, you could try one of these classic holiday pet books for kids; Carl's Christmas, about a
Rottie who spends his holidays spreading good cheer, or The Westie Winter the story of a little girl who has a surprise for her Grandpa.
For the Golden Retreiver Lover, there's Christmas Is Good! Trixie Treats & Holiday Wisdom, and for the Pug Parent there's Homer for the Holidays, so no matter what breed of dog they're looking for there's a Christmas Dog Book
for all of them
. And there are wonderful classic cat books, such as The Christmas Day Kitten
for the festive feline lovers on your list.

It' probably not a good idea to assume that someone wants a pet as a gift. It's always possible they would love a pet, but can't fit a pet into their lifestyle right now. But if you think it's likely they're looking to add a four-legged-friend to their life, don't take the fun out of it by choosing the pet for them. Let them decide which pet is the match for them, and help make their first few months with that pet easier by giving them the gift of some much-needed but often overlooked supplies and support.
