No Spill Bowl-slick!

Lg4 The folks at Leerburg summed this bowl up best when they called the Road Refresher "the slickest no spill bowl I've ever seen".

Tn20 In short, the bowl has a lipped cover to prevent spilling, and uses a floating plate to restrict the flow of water, while always leaving some water available.  Originally designed for travel purposes, anyone can see that this bowl would also help a dog who digs or tips their water dish.  It's even got a velcro bottom, so it can grip to car floor mats or carpets.

I had to laugh at one testimonial from a woman that had resigned herself to putting her dog's water dish in the bathtub, because he spilled so much water.  This even cuts down on slobber up to 90%-bonus!

$19.99 and free supersaver shipping at Amazon.

Alternative Techniques to aid in Independence Day Anxiety

Examinerheimdall(2) Our friend Meg, with the Denver Alternative Pet Medicine Examiner wrote up a very helpful article about alternative or aromatherapy options to help those of us whose dogs don't do so well with the fireworks.

"It's probably too late to work on deconditioning or desensitzing your animal to loud noises in time for the big noisy day, July 4th. Still, the most important thing to remember is that you should never reinforce the fear.  As your dog's guardian, you should not reward the behavior (cowering in fear) with extra attention to the dog through stroking it, or trying to reassure it in any other way. Valafear The opposite approach of becoming angry or reproaching the dog will also be counterproductive. One tactic that may be useful is playing a game with the dog to distract it from the fireworks, or having it play with another dog (as long as the other dog does not have the same fear).

Sometimes, exposure to loud noises is just unavoidable. Here are some natural remedies that might help your dog overcome, or at least deal sufficiently with the noise not to be traumatized too badly..."

Backyard Cats

HarnessDo you want to keep your cat off of counter tops and curtains?  Maybe you'd like your cat to stay safely in a fenced in area, without jumping or climbing the confines. The Backyard Cat harness system is a creative solution to both of these feline health and safety concerns.  In essence, the tool is a small harness, attached to a one pound sachet that drags below your cat's abdomen.  The extra weight deters cats from jumping by disrupting their timing and balance, so they are less likely to jump and climb.Resting cat

So your cat goes outside, without a leash or kennel to confine them, and this training aid helps to curb their desire to explore beyond the fence.  Pretty cool!

After a few training sessions, your cat will hopefully stop feeling the desire to jump up or climb, and the tool will no longer be necessary.  3 sizes are available, starting at $19.99, and all of them include harnesses.  Check out their FAQ for more info on how it works and the recommended usage.

Kitty Walks

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and your cat is stuck indoors? Hardly seems fair that the dog gets to go for regular walks, right?  Let's see if we can't help you get your kitty some exercise in the great outdoors.

Come_with_me_cat_harness First, you need a harness-not a collar, because these can be slipped out of pretty easily.  The Cat Connection has a cool harness and bungie combo(from the makers of the Gentle Leader).  With a bungie leash, your cat is less likely to become tangled, but it allows a little give if your cat pulls.  $14.95

Most trainers recommend starting by putting the harness on the cat, and allowing them to just get used to the feel of it around the house.  SpottyOnce acclimated, try attaching a short piece of string or leash to the harness, so they can understand how the leash pulls or drags.  (I bet you they love playing with that string in the meantime!)

Start out on walks during quite times, away from traffic or strange dogs that might startle the cat.  After a few tries, your cat will come to enjoy the walk, and all the sights and smells that come with it.

Birthday Parties for Pups

September 1st will be the 3 year anniversary of Tahlula's adoption.  She's had a rough couple of years and some health problems, but is doing so well now that I've been thinking we need to have a party to celebrate.  Perhaps a sort of "re-birth" day party?

Party Pampered Puppy has a great article about what you need to consider when planning a doggiecentric party...

"Do dogs really enjoy birthday parties?  Sure! Dogs love attention, and birthday parties are like a smorgasbord of attention..."

They include info on how to hosts different sorts of parties, with venue suggestions like a park picnic, barbecue, or a day at the doggie daycare.  They've given some ideas for activities, like renting agility equipment.  There are also helpful reminders about things like photography or treats, so you can be sure to cover all your bases.

Maggie The great part about a dog party is that no one cares how pretty the icing is on the dog cake-it's going to taste great no matter what!  Check out a few recipes at the Dog Treat Recipe exchange.

Softening the Loss-a guest post at Paw Talk

Inside_header_testimonials Once again, we were lucky enough to be asked to offer a guest post at Paw Talk.  Today's topic: Soft-Hearted Pillows, as an alternative to urns for pet remains.

"The options for pet parents that have just received the ashes of their recently deceased pets can be somewhat limited or impersonal.  Perhaps you don’t have a good space for a burial, or you don’t care much for putting your pet’s remains up on a shelf.  Soft-hearted products has designed a very compassionate alternative"
